The Annual Dinner and AGM, March 2011

'The DBPPA held its annual dinner on Friday, March 2011 at the Madras Gymkhana Club. It was a wonderful evening with close to 300 past pupils (From across batches), teachers and the school management coming together for an evening full of nostalgia, fun and reunions. Shivkumar Eashwaran, MD Shivsu Industries of the 1986 batch was the Guest of Honour and addressed the gathering. Rev Fr Rector Amalraj Thomas commenced proceedings with a prayer and that was followed by the Delegate's Address by Rev Fr Stanley Ignatius, the Principal of Don Bosco Egmore. Ashwin Rajagopalan, President of the DBPPA presented a report of activities of the DBPPA while PS Prasad, Treasurer presented the accounts. The Class of 1985 launched their scholarship fund and a unique DBPPA card was also announced. TE Giridhar Raj, Vice President DBPPA proposed the Vote of Thanks. This was followed by dinner and fellowship at the Poolside Lawn of the Madras Gymkhana Club - the perfect setting for a great evening.

The DBPPA organised a special Christmas dinner for boys at the Bosco Illam, MKB Nagar (Near Perambur) on Monday, December 20, 2010. Close to 100 boys enjoyed a sumptuous dinner on the eve of Christmas! The Principal of DB Egmore Rev Fr Stanley Ignatius and Rev Fr Johnson from Bosco Illam joined members of the Don Bosco Past Pupils Association on a night when the smiles stretched for miles!

October 28, 2010. The Annual Deepavali Dinner was organised for the Night School Students at DB Egmore by the DBPPA. This year the dinner was put together for 100 kids (50 at the School and 50 at a satellite centre near DB Egmore). The kids were provided with packed dinners and a stationery Kit (Sponsored by Pradeep Jain - Class of 1974). The expenses for the dinner were completely met by contributions from Past Pupils. The pictures were snapped by Rosekumar (Class of 1985). Thanks for all the past pupils who made it & for the Management for making it possible.

September 17, 2010, Don Bosco Egmore: Four Accomplished teachers and an evening full of nostalgia and inspiring thoughts. Mr A Selvadoray, Ms Rohini Chitnis, Mr Raja Pandi and Mr Michael Sundar each spoke for about ten minutes and then interacted with the Past Pupils in an informal and spirited interactive session. These special teachers spoke about the times at Don Bosco and also had great words of advice and inspiration. It was a very special evening. It was Master Class !

DBPL 2.0 - 6 teams and Unlimited Fun!

6 Teams and close to 100 past pupils came together on Aug 15, 2010 for the DBPL 2.0, the Inter-Batch Crocker Tournament. Rev Fr Stanley Ignatius, the Principal of Don Bosco Egmore welcomed the teams and had words of praise for the DB Egmore Past Pupil Community. In the first match 2006 comfortably beat an Assorted team. In the second game 1993 knocked out a strong 1990 team and in the third prelim game 1989 beat an assorted Team. The three teams got into the round robin to determine the finalists. In the first game 2006 beat 1993 who bounced back in the second match to beat 1989. 1989, last year's runner-up needed to beat 2006 to keep their hopes alive but failed to do so in the last game. 2006 (Last year's champions) looked red hot but were stunned by the 1993 batch in the final. It was a humdinger of a final with 2006 needing 6 runs with 2 balls to go. But in the end it was 1993 that won and were the Champions of the Second Inter-Batch Crocker tournament. It was a Smashing Sunday and everybody present had a blast!

DBPPA Felicitates and Interacts with V Anand

It was an amazing afternoon; one that over 60 DB Past Pupils will remember for a long long time. A Chance to come up close and personal with one of the greatest minds in the world and one of DB Egmore's most illustrious Past Pupils. V Anand made the time to spend more than an hour with the DBPPA in an informal interactive session close on the heels of a major career high. The World Chess Champion spoke about interesting experiences and achievements from his career. He also spoke about the nuances of the game and future trends. A lot of questions centered around his latest world championship triumph and inevitably quite a few questions were about his school days at DB Egmore. It was Anand at his composed and witty best and it was well worth all the time the DB Past Pupils made for the event on a busy Tuesday afternoon (Check out the DBPPA Facebook Page for Event pictures)

DBPPA's Latest Initiative goes Live

The latest initiative of the DBPPA - A state-of-the-art water treatment plant to handle the needs of the entire primary school. The cost of the plant is approximately Rs 4 lakhs. This plant uses the Reverse Osmosis process and has a capacity 500 litres/hour. This can handle the needs of the entire primary school with ease. It was made possible by the generous donation of Shivkumar Easwaran (86 Batch) & Sushilkumar Easwaran (88 Batch). The plant was blessed and inaugurated Rev Fr VV Abraham Sdb, Director - Don Bosco Centre for Education & culture, Chennai and former Principal DB Egmore on Saturday, January 30, 2009.

The DBPPA event that was the talk of the town

It was a Magical evening. You had to be there to feel it. It was the DBPPA-ETA Star Wisdom Keys event that took place on Jan 9, 2010 at Taj Mount Road. Over 225 DB Egmore Alumni had the time of their life. The evening had everything - Star Speakers, Nostalgia, Great Spirits (Of all kinds), Awesome Dinner and above all the unique bond that keeps bringing DB Egmore past pupils together like no other school anywhere on the planet. The evening brought together four of the school's illustrious past pupils; all achievers in their own right - YG Mahendra (1965), Vijay Amritraj (1968), Venkatesh (1978), Dayanidhi Maran (1985) Here's a quick summary:

Dayanidhi Maran spoke of how the various challenges he overcame at school have helped him face challenges in his political career. He added that life is full of surprises!
Venkatesh said that he learned his acting skills (!) at DB Egmore. He also spoke about the importance about being at peace with your inner self and how that has helped him a better human being and also successful in his career.
Vijay Amritraj spoke of the all-round education at DB Egmore that made a huge impact. He elaborated on the five Ds - Desire, Dedication, Determination, Discipline and Divine Intervention and how they have been the drivers of his success.
YG Mahendra echoed the Tagline of the DBPPA when he said his years at DB Egmore were the best days of his life. He added that his sense of humour and innovation were traits he developed at DB Egmore.
The Delegate of the DBPPA and the Principal of DB Egmore Rev Fr Stanley Ignatius said he was amazed at the strong sense of bonding among DB Egmore alumni and said that this event would set a new benchmark for future DBPPA events.
Ashwin Rajagopalan the president of the DBPPA spoke of the association’s ability to bring together different generations of past pupils together with quality events - Nostalgia, Networking and the opportunity to give back something to the school and the community.

It was a unique evening and there will be more!

The Inter-batch Crocker Tournament that Rocked DB Egmore!

8 Teams and over 100 DB Egmore Past Pupils showed up on Sunday, September 20, 2009 for the first ever Inter-batch Crocker tournament. It was not just nostalgia and fun that kept the evening lively; the competition got quite intense during the last few games and showed that the DB Egmore spirit is well and truly alive! Crocker a game unique to DB Egmore might have seen its popularity wane a little bit over the last few years but Sunday's tournament proves that Crocker still rocks! There were teams from 1976 to 2008 and the enthusiasm was unbelievable! Here's a quick summary of how the teams fared!

Quarter Finals:

I Quarter Final: 1981 beat 1990 (Shock Defeat? Not if you saw how good the 1981 team was)
II Quarter Final: 2006 beat 2008 (2006 looked the team to beat!)
III Quarter Final: 1989 beat 1976 (Not as easy as it might have seemed!)
IV Quarter Final: Assorted Team beat 1987 (The wildcards came together and took the game away)

Semi Finals:

I Semi Final: 1989 beat 1981 (Was a keenly contested game)
II Semi Final: 2006 beat the Assorted Team (2006 looked even better than the Quarter Finals)

And then it was the Grand Finale. 2006 were put into bat and made 88 runs in 6 overs and defended the total beating the Class of 1989.

It was a super Sunday and an evening that nobody would forget for a long time. The good news is that we will probably have more :)

The DB Class of 89 Chair Launched

The DB Class of 89 celebrated 20 years of passing out of DB Egmore with the creation of a DB Class of 89 Chair. A need-based annual scholarship of Rs 15,000 for one deserving student from Std XII also based on Academic Excellence & Overall Conduct. The Batch has created a corpus fund that will generate the required amount every year for this scholarship. Mr A. Selvadoray who (incidentally) retired from DB Egmore in 1989 gave away the first award to Charles Emmanuel Ezhil Raj a student of XII B on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the school assembly. The Class of 89 Chair was conceived on June 20, 2009 during the batch's 20th year reunion and has already been put into action. DB Egmore's new principal Fr Stanley responded very swiftly to the initiative. Will other batches take the cue and plan their own Class of ... Chair?

The DBPPA Exec. Committee Meets Dayanidhi Maran

It was meant to be a formal interaction but DB Egmore guys will always be DB Egmore guys! The first official interaction of the DBPPA Executive Committee with DB Alumnus and Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran was informal yet very insightful and a platform where a lot of positives emerged. Dayanidhi Maran was full of ideas and suggestions showing us all that he still shares a special and continuing bond with the school. It was wonderful to see senior teachers take part in the interaction too. (Pics on our Facebook page) Dayanidhi agreed to be part of a major event that the DBPPA will put together during this academic year. For more details on the event watch this space!

DBPPA welcomes the New Principal

Don Bosco Egmore has a new principal who has just assumed charge. Fr P Stanley Ignatius is young and dynamic and has a wide perspective including an International stint (His last assignment) at Don Bosco Fujairah, UAE. He is also a keen sports lover. The DBPPA wish him all the very best and looks forward to working closely with him and the management to achieve our shared goals in the spirit of Don Bosco. 100/100 for the Class of 2009

The Plus Two results have just been announced and Don Bosco Egmore achieved 100% results. The school's highest total was an impressive 1176 out of 1200 marks. It just fell seven marks short of the highest total in the state (1183/1200). It is a terrific achievement. Kudos to the Teachers, Management and all students from the Class of 2009 for this performance. Three Cheers!

The Great DBPPA Crocker Game 2009 - Free Gaaji for all!!

45 Guys, 2 'gaaji' hungry teams and two fun 8 over a side games under one of the legendary trees near the Basketball Court. Crocker fun at its very best. March 8 might have been International Women's Day but in DB Egmore it was time for unlimited nostalgia as all the eager crocker players tried to recreate the magic with the crocker bats! It all started with a quick refresher on the crocker rules and then it was time for crocker action. It started with the two captains going through the bat in the air crocker toss!! Then it was time for two awesome games. The first was 8 overs a side and the second was 9 overs a side. It was terrific to see guys from the 60s play hard ball with the guys from the 2000s. It was a great mix of guys from different batches spanning all the decades! Everybody wanted to give it a thwack and the lack of any audited scoring (No PWC team here!) saw scoring rates that would put 20:20 games to shame. It was great fun and all the players decided to keep the game alive with the first Inter-Batch Crocker Tournament (Ten a side) in July 2009. What a Sunday... It took the time and effort of the School Management, the Executive Committee, Sponsors, Teachers and all the Past Pupils (Who made it) to make it happen. And here's a quick recap:

7:30 am: The Cars start queuing up at primary school for the rally (A whopping 45 cars showed up)
7:45 am: Rajesh briefs the participants (Rajesh and Kasi are both ex-DB and made the rally possible with their professional guidance and involvement. They were backed by a team of marshals)
8:05 am: Armaan Ebrahim flags off the first car after the briefing. Rev Fr Vice Provincial, Rector and Principal also grace the occasion with their presence. Past Principals Rev Fathers VV Abraham, John Santosham and Michael also make it for the rally
10:00 am: The scene shifts to a private beach on ECR as the first cars start arriving.
11:00 am: The private beach comes alive with beer, music, games and unlimited fun and the whole beach gets drowned with the DB Spirit! (Its great to see over 200 past pupils and their families and teachers come together for a fun Sunday). There are a series of fun games, DJ and dancing, face painting for the kids, rides along the beach in a cool 4x4. Everyone had a blast
12:45 pm: Yummy Lunch is served and soon after that the winners are announced. The first three cars won fabulous holidays. The winner - Naveen Alexander and the boys from the class of 1997.

August 29, 2008: Annual Tea Meeting and Crocker under Lights at School

The DBPPA completely rejigged the Annual Tea Meeting that usually takes place at school in the month of August. While the meeting was well attended and the high tea more than adequate it was the Crocker under floodlights that made it one helluva evening. More than 200 past pupils were there that evening and large numbers of DB guys who had passed out of the school in the 2000s. Most of them got a chance to play crocker - At one point there were three matches taking place at the same time. Fun Unlimited!!

September 5, 2008: Mr Selvadoray returns to DB Egmore for a Teacher's Day Special

The stage was set for a great evening - Teachers Day, A peerless teacher and an audience that has always been in awe of this great teacher. For all those present last evening, it was an evening we will treasure for ever and ever! Mr Selvadoray arrived ahead of the appointed time (5:00 pm) to a class room that was packed beyond our wildest expectations. At a rock show you grab any place you get - Chairs, the floor; this event was no different. The DBPPA had organised seating for 85 guys and there must have been over 150 past pupils of Don Bosco who became part of a unique moment in this school's great history and to witness the Return of the King. It was like being back in school all over again - Blackboard and chalk, a lot us in uniform, et all! Mr Selvadoray chose Thomas Gray's poem "Elegy Written in a Country Church-yard" as the lesson for the day. This poem was written when the Industrial Revolution in England in the 18th Century had created a lot of social change, displaced a lot of the weaker sections of the society and made them poorer. Mr Selvadoray drew a parallel between England in the 18th Century and the Indian Economic Liberalisation story which is widening the gap between the wealthy and poor. That was all we needed to get into the Selva Zone - he dissected the first couple of stanzas for us and we already felt like we were back in school and were thoroughly spellbound. But the spell didn't last forever; after an hour of poetry, an interactive session and a lecture by Mr Selvadoray on a wide range of social issues, it was time to go home. Except this time nobody wanted to leave school; almost the same feeling like our last day at school.

Crocker - Our very own game!

Crocker may not be as popular today as it was in its heyday but is still reigns supreme among the past pupils. Even today when DB guys get together a game of Crocker manages to bring back all those wonderful memories. And for those of you who would like to keep the rules handy here we go (A sincere attempt to codify the rules of the game!):

Equipment: Any Baseball bat and ball (Could be white or red)
Members/Team: As many as you have. Just remember to divide them equally!
The Stumps: Trees work well! Otherwise any object that you designate will do just fine!
Distance from Bowler to Batsman: Depends on the space available!
The Bowler: Has to bowl 8-ball overs and only underarm. Is free to aim at the batsman’s body!
The Batsman: Has to run every time he hits the ball and run horizontally and return in time to face the next ball. Every return trip earns him two runs. If you want more value for the big shots you can run up to the extended running creases and earn four or six runs!
Modes of Dismissal: You could get out caught, bowled and also if the ball hits any part of your body. If the ball hits any part of the body you are half out and you could also get half out if you run on the last ball of the over. And it is the batsman’s responsibility to keep track of the last ball – No umpires here!
Innings: One innings games or double innings games (Like a test match). Double Innings games are preferred so that you are assured of at least one innings of ‘Ghaji’. You could also limit the number of overs to a side.
Oorutals (Low Bounce) can be kicked: A rule devised to counter the threat of low bounce deliveries rolling all the way to your stumps! If the batsman feels the ball is too low (Bounce), he can kick the ball and the bowler has to re-bowl it. One of the most contentious rules which has seen a lot of disputes. Understandably!
The Toss: A very important ritual. The bat is thrown by one captain and the rival captain has to catch the bat where he can. And then both captains begin a cat and mouse game of putting one hand on top of the other till one of them manages to hold the top of the bat – And that captain wins the toss. And usually every victorious captain chooses to bat!

Don Bosco Past Pupils Association Egmore

There are few schools in the world that evoke the same ‘school spirit’. Call it the spirit of Don Bosco or just the good ole’ DB Egmore bonding, the warmth and the camaraderie that the Don Bosco Egmore past pupils share is truly unique. This spirit binds us and allows past pupils from different backgrounds and age groups to find common ground. And that common ground is Don Bosco Egmore. A place where a lot of us believe we have spent some of the best years of our life. This website is aimed at extending that Common ground to cyberspace where DB Egmore guys from across the world can relive those glory years, keep in touch with other past pupils and also get frequent updates from the school and the Don Bosco Past Pupils Association (DBPPA).

St. Don Bosco envisioned a community in which the past pupils played a vital role. The DBPPA (Egmore) certainly has been a prime example of this vision becoming reality. The association has been working very closely with the school at various levels and is probably the most active school alumni association in Chennai.The DBPPA meets periodically and the association’s activities are a perfect blend of hard work and fun and draw strength from the strong sense of nostalgia. The association is open to all past pupils of Don Bosco Egmore and provides a perfect platform to serve, share, network and have fun! The DBPPA’s wide range of activities include community service projects, fundraisers, periodic meetings, fun outings and interaction with the teachers and the management.
